Advanced Lindy Hop Workshop - Saturday 14th June 2025 - 1pm

from $50.00

Get ready to elevate your dancing at our advanced Lindy Hop workshop!

This session is designed for dancers looking to sharpen their technique, expand their repertoire, and dive deeper into connection, timing and dynamics. Led by two of our finest Lindy Hop instructors, Alana and Tom, this workshop is for students who are comfortable in regular intermediate classes and looking for a new challenge.

Come prepared to be challenged, have fun, and take your Lindy Hop to the next level!

You will need to select whether you wish to do the class as a Lead or Follow when you register. You can choose to learn either role, but we ask that you stick with that role for the duration of the workshop. Nominating your role before class allows us to ensure we will have a balance of leads and follows.

This is a 2.5 hour workshop that kicks of at 1pm, be sure to arrive 15 minutes early

These workshops are for dancers who feel confident in our current level 2 classes and are ready to explore more nuanced topics and more challenging skills.

Our teachers will expect that you are already strong in your fundamentals, and are ready to learn at a faster pace than expected in weekly classes.

You don’t have to bring your own partner, as we’ll be rotating partners, but if you can encourage a friend to give it a go and try the opposite role to you, that’s excellent.

If you bring a partner and wish to stay together we can accommodate that, but bear in mind that dancing with many different partners will help you to get the steps faster with fewer technical feedback loops.

LOCATION: The Danish Club, 36 Austin St, Newstead

COST: $50

WHAT TO WEAR:
Deodorant! Please use low-scented or hypoallergenic deodorants and apply before you enter. Don’t wear perfume, as some people have allergies.

Dancing is exercise! So wear clothes you can move freely and sweat in. Most people go fairly casual to classes and save their fancy duds for going out social dancing. Some people like to dress a little bit fancy wherever they go, and we love to see it! You do you, swing kid. You do you

Shoes! Wear comfortable shoes that won't kick off your feet and that aren't too grippy. The floor is slightly sprung timber with medium grip.

The room is well air-conditioned, so if you are a person who chills quickly when you stop moving, you might want to bring a layer you can quickly throw off and on.

GETTING THERE:
On-street parking is available, but make sure you get there early enough in case you have to park in the next street.
- 5 minute walk from Breakfast Creek Road Bus Routes (300, 306)
- 12 minute walk from Teneriffe Ferry Terminal
- 13 minute walk from Bowen Hills Train Station

WHAT TO EXPECT:
In partnered swing dancing there are two roles, Lead and Follow, which are both equally challenging and fun in their own distinct ways. These roles have never been strictly gender-specific and we have no problems at all if you are a woman who chooses to lead or a man who chooses to follow. We only hope to achieve an even balance of the roles in class if possible. If there are a couple of bonus leads or follows don’t worry, the class will rotate and everyone will get to try the steps with multiple partners. Occasionally we’ll have one couple who want to stick together and we can accommodate that. At the beginning of a Level 1 class we often go through some easy solo warm-up movement to music. Then we teach a “Basic” repeatable footwork pattern that will be the basis for the additional moves we will teach you later in the class. Students are encouraged to ask questions of the teachers if things are unclear or something isn’t working, however we ask that students refrain from giving each other unsolicited feedback. There may be some more experienced students or some of our other teachers dancing in the group to even up the numbers and help the class progress more quickly. You may ask your partner for brief feedback, but please do not hold up the rotation or be talking with your partner while the teachers are trying to talk.

Corner Pocket Swing acknowledges the Yuggera people and the Turrbal people as the traditional owners of Meanjin, the lands where we live, learn and work. We recognise their cultures, histories and diversity, and their continuing connection to the lands, water and communities. We also pay our deepest respects to Elders, past, present and emerging.
We acknowledge the contemporary Queensland Aboriginal community, who have survived invasion and dispossession, and continue to maintain their identity, culture and Indigenous rights.

Corner Pocket Swing acknowledges that we teach historical dance styles that are from a culture that is not our own.
When we teach these dances which are rooted in and inspired by the foundations of Jazz music we are guests in the house of Black American culture. We respect and cherish the original Black musicians and dancers who shared their amazing creativity and talent during a time when they were routinely disrespected and mistreated by the society in which they lived.
