Brisbane Balboa Weekend 2023
Sept 29 - Oct 1

Three nights of social dancing with some of Brisbane’s hottest live swing bands.

Two days of workshop classes for intermediate and above Balboa dancers.

Featuring Australia’s most beloved teaching couple, Julia and John Wharington.

PLUS special guest teachers from far away Bal lands, Sam Chan (California, USA) and Lizou Bouchard (Canada)

Saturday of Joy! Nov 18th 2023

This will be a fabulous one-time-only opportunity to learn from this amazing internationally acclaimed swing dancer, right here in Brisbane!
Based in the USA, Joy is passionate about the improvisational energy and partnered creativity of swing dancing. She loves to both lead and follow and has dabbled in almost all styles of swing dance, with an emphasis on Balboa, Collegiate Shag, Lindy Hop and St. Louis Shag. One of the most versatile ambidancers of the modern swing dance scene, she has been teaching since 2014 and has won and placed at international and national competitions at events such as All Balboa Weekend, The Snowball, Camp Hollywood, Great Lakes Balboa Escape, Hot Rhythm Holiday, and LA Shag Festival.
In class, Joy exudes energy and positivity, with a focus on partner connection, mutual responsiveness, creativity, and musicality. Her teaching style focuses on empowering students to pursue their own growth (in whatever form that may be), as well as technique and partnership. She loves to share her passion for the subtleties and musical dexterity of Balboa, as well as exploring new ideas and followers’ impact.
As Joy is highly skilled as both a Lead and a Follow, she will have our CPS directors, Rob Edwards and Emma Hadfield, both on hand as her assistant teachers throughout the day.
The tentative class schedule is as follows:
Class1 [Balboa, L2+]: 10:00-11:15
Class2 [Balboa, L2+]: 11:30-12:45
Lunch break: 12:45-14:00 (1h15m)
Class3 [Slow Bal, L2+]: 14:00-15:15
Class4 [Collegiate Shag, All]: 15:30-16:45
Pre-booking for this workshop will be essential to secure a place, and tickets will go on sale at midday 16th of September.

Brisbane Balboa Weekend 2022

The Brisbane Balboa Weekend is finally happening again!!

Nourish your soul and heal your heart with a deliciously rejuvenating weekend of relaxed Balboa dancing.

Shuffling will commence with a social dance on the evening of Friday the 30th of September and will conclude Sunday the 2nd of October after a wonderful weekend of workshop classes and live swing bands.

Workshop teachers have been announced!
We are super excited that Peter Flahiff and Lauren Smith from the USA will be flying in to share their passion with us!

Slow Balboa For Everyone!

(2hrs Level 1 + 2hrs Level 2)
Slow Bal is not just Balboa done slowly. It is actually a different dance that was done to slow swing music on the Balboa peninsula. There are a lot of beautiful swing songs that are too slow to dance Lindy Hop to, but have the perfect feel for Slow Bal. It's relaxed, flowing, and graceful, giving you a musical match for wonderful songs like Stardust, Moonglow, and Moonlight Serenade. It is characterised by a basic that is danced in close embrace and has a rhythm with triple steps like Lindy Hop.
LEVEL 1 (1-3 pm)
We'll be starting from the beginning with this dance, but some prior partner dance experience is recommended, as the basic is danced in a close embrace connection and we will be progressing you through to more advanced movements.
Level 1 will cover the skills required for the level 2 workshop.
LEVEL 2 (3:30-5:30 pm)
We will be exploring some next-level movement to really open up your repertoire and style on the social dance floor.
No partner required, we will be rotating partners in class. It's always a good idea to bring a drink bottle and a notebook to dance classes. Shoes with low friction soles are preferable. The floor is slightly sprung timber with medium grip. The room is well air-conditioned.

We are very excited to share some swingout ideas that will hopefully upgrade your entire partner dancing game. There will be 3hrs of class material with a few breaks in between to let your brain sponges rest.
If you have done zero swingouts then this is for you. If you have done 40 million swingouts then this is for you too!
If you don’t already love swingouts then we are hoping you can find the love with us. We want to show you that a swingout can be like a little story. It can be action-packed or soft and sincere. It can be smooth as silk or sharp and dramatic. It can be stoic and serious or goofy and hilarious. Building the tools and connection skills to be able to tell stories like that is what we are hoping to achieve.
